About Solar First Look

Most people first hear about solar from someone selling it. We built Solar First Look so you can get an independent answer first: whether solar makes financial sense for your home, based on your actual roof, your electricity use and your utility’s real rules.

Solar First Look was built by an expert in the solar industry, who knows what installers look at, where quotes and savings claims go wrong, and which questions homeowners should ask before they sign anything.

How we stay independent

  • We don’t sell, install or finance solar systems.
  • We don’t sell your contact details, and we don’t share them without your permission.
  • We earn money from $4.99 reports, and from clearly labelled ads and affiliate links on our free pages. None of that affects any calculation or recommendation, and there are no ads in reports or checkout.
  • Our reports can, and often do, conclude that solar is not worth it.

Where our numbers come from

Roof data from Google’s Solar API; electricity rates from utility tariffs and regulators; seasonal solar patterns from the European Commission’s PVGIS; costs from published Canadian averages; incentives from official program pages. See our methodology.

What we are not

We are not a government agency or utility, and not affiliated with any. Our reports are estimates, not engineering designs, quotes or guarantees.

Our rebate monitor

An automated monitor checks official program pages (respecting each site’s robots.txt) so we can spot changes quickly. It identifies itself as RebateMonitor with a link to this page.
