How much do solar panels cost in BC and Alberta?
Solar is priced per watt of panel capacity (DC). Published Canadian averages put installed prices around $2.50 to $3.30 per watt before incentives in BC and Alberta (EnergyHub; ATCO Energy). We use $2.30–$3.40 in our reports to allow for the spread between companies.
| System size | At $2.50/W | At $3.00/W |
|---|---|---|
| 4 kW | $10,000 | $12,000 |
| 7 kW | $17,500 | $21,000 |
| 10 kW | $25,000 | $30,000 |
What’s in the price
- Panels, racking and wiring
- Inverter (one string inverter, or microinverters on each panel)
- Labour, permits and electrical inspection
- The utility connection application
- Sometimes: an electrical panel upgrade, which can add significantly
Why small systems cost more per watt
Permits, electrical work, design and the connection cost roughly the same for a 3 kW system as for a 10 kW one, so small systems carry a higher price per watt. We assume a minimum of about $8,000 for any installed system.
Costs after installation
Panels need little maintenance, but a string inverter typically lasts 10–15 years and will likely need replacing once in the panels’ life. Microinverters often carry 25-year warranties. See maintenance.
Taxes
In BC, solar panels and the inverters and wiring bought with them are exempt from PST. GST applies in both provinces.
